DaT-SPECT imaging enables differentiation of neurodegenerative causes of parkinsonism, where typically patients will have abnormal scans, from other movement or tremor disorders where typically the DaT-SPECT study will be normal. The clinical diagnosis of Parkinson disease (PD) is difficult, as several other neurodegenerative and basal ganglia disorders have similar clinical presentations. Dopamine transporter single-photon emission computed tomography has been proposed as possible diagnostic tool to help differentiate idiopathic PD from essential tremor and other disorders that present with parkinsonian symptoms.
However, no direct comparison-studies of these two radiotracers as to their in vivo binding to 5-HT transporters have been reported so far. Therefore, it is still unclear which of the two radiotracers is more suitable for single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) imaging of 5-HT transporters.
Methods– SPECT scanning was performed 20 h after injection of beta‐CIT and UPDRS was done at the time of beta‐CIT injection. Results– All patients in the present study showed less nigro‐striatal degeneration in relation to UPDRS motor scores than the patients with idiopathic Parkinson's disease.
